Ewalu to Host Tour of Iowa Prison Industries

On April 9th, Ewalu will host a tour of Iowa Prison Industries in Anamosa – followed by a question and answer time over lunch.

Pastors enjoy new furniture
at the Ewalu Stone CenterEwalu began looking into Iowa Prison Industries when it was time to replace original furniture at the Ewalu Stone Retreat Center. The prices were competitive, and the board and staff decided to place an order. The first order was a "fireplace set" consisting of two chairs, three loveseats and a coffee table. Ewalu staff and, more importantly, guests at the Stone Retreat Center have been pleased. The furniture is attractive, comfortable and well-made. Upon arriving for an annual retreat, the first thing Pastor Kurt Hansen said (after "Hello!") was, "Thanks for the really nice furniture! It fits my back perfectly!"

Ewalu will continue to purchase furniture from Iowa Prison Industries, but the decision goes beyond quality, comfort and price – though that is certainly enough. Purchasing furniture (and an array of other products) from Iowa Prison Industries is a ministry in itself – an indirect ministry to inmates by giving them the opportunity to learn marketable skills. Increasing the demand for prison industry products expands the program and allows more inmates to participate. Supporting prison industries is not "hands-on" prison ministry, but it certainly coincides with the mission and ministry of the Church.

The tour will provide an introduction to the ministry of Iowa Prison Industries. It is open to synod staff, pastors and laypersons, but it will be limited to 20 participants. The tour will begin at 9:30 AM at the prison and will last about 2 ½ hours. Some may wish to ride in Ewalu vans (leaving from the Ewalu main site at 8:00 AM); some may wish to drive directly to the prison themselves. (Directions to the meeting place and rules for prison visits will be provided to the participants.)

Cost: $15 per person, includes lunch.
