Wed Jan 5 10:40:27 2005 from Mandy (Geissal) Tamblyn <tamblyna@mail.fortschools.org> I was part of EWALU summers of '92 and '93. It's been really great to read through the posts and hear about how people are doing. Allison (Burke) Andrews is my link to camp and after the reunion she shared some pictures with me - cool to see familiar faces! She's been trying to get me to come to the reunion, but the timing is hard. I'm a teacher and we always start school on or right after Labor Day so I'm usually in my room working on last minute plans. Apparently, I still need to work on my time management skills... Camp...some of my fondest memories! It took me years to get over Wendy's packing light concept (now I wish I could still do it!) and Eric, every time I hear bohemian rhapsody I remember that goofy skit we did - Eek! Same with the Unbelievable song with the girls. '93 was the year of the rain storms when the mighty Maquoketa (I murdered that word) really lived up to its name...It's funny how things I have forgotten come back to me (burning homemade candles and those little heart notes - not that those two things go together...) and then I end up really nostalgic! It was such an amazing way to spend summers, with such fabulous people - I'm so glad that EWALU has this board! ~Mandy (Geissal) Tamblyn Tue Jan 25 14:39:22 2005 from Hey all, the board has been silent as of late, so I thought I would post a message. We are out recruiting couselors currently, so if you know of a fine young person who would be a good staff person at Ewalu, send 'em are way! Mon Jan 31 20:05:38 2005 from Howdy all! I'm an alum from the 93 and 94 summers. . Good to hear everything seems to be going well for all. Things are well here in suburban Chicago. I recently got my MBA and I am in sales for a company that manufactures fertizer. (No Scott Peterson jokes allowed!) I'm getting married this fall to a wonderful woman named Grace, and I move into our house in two weeks (and for those who are wondering, we are not living in sin. . . Grace moves in after we get married. :) ). Again, it's good to recognize a bunch of names. May ye all be blessed. Eric Tue Feb 8 21:19:15 2005 from Hola all! Im trying to procrastinate from doing my readings for today, so I thought Id take the chance to say, Hi! If you dont know, Sara (Klosterboer) and I got married in 2003 and moved to Saint Louis the next year. So, if youre ever passing through the area, youre more than welcome to stay. Saint Louis is a fun place. Blessings on your schooling, work, discipleship, and whatever else you might be up to. Shalom, Brian Brandsmeier (late 90s early 00s) Wed Feb 16 16:52:04 2005 from Hi everyone! I was a counselor there in 1989. My husband and I both attended camp at EWALU from 1978-?? (9 summers for me). We are getting ready to send our oldest to mini camp this summer. It is an exciting time. He is nervous about it. Wish we were closer so he could spend more time just visiting. We were at the alumni weekend in 2001. Haven't made it back since then. We live in Lees Summit, MO. Would love to hear from any '89 staff or those who've also sent their little ones off to EWALU after being a camper there yourself. Tue Feb 22 01:42:13 2005 from Hey, everyone, the best summer I ever spent was as a camp counselor in the summer of 1991. I see Robin and Lori have been on the site. Anyone else? This is wonderful having an e-mail site. I'm in Des Moines now, work at the Register, am married to Sylvia and have a 1 1/2-year old girl Annika. Please e-mail me if you were one of the Pepto Bismol (hot pink shirts) gang. 03/10/05 @ 18:21 · Email: rrhanson@aol.com · IP: 208.186.145.75 Comment from: Scott ('81 and '82) and Robin ('82 and '83) Hanson [Visitor] Greetings. I am literally half a world away from EWALU...
but I was wondering ( as a topic) what are people's fondest memories of camp. One of mine
was a canoe trip that I lead... in that 1973 Dodge sports van... "3 on the tree"
and bad tires... I remember the last thing I said to Frances before I left, "Anyone
know how to drive a stick?" I was, esentially, the only one who could drive... and to
be honest (now that it has been more than 10 years) was not all that familiar with it. 03/25/05 @ 08:59 · Email: dave_rod@juno.com · IP: 151.148.194.72 Comment from: Dave Rod [Visitor] Barry, Before the 1973 Dodge sports van, there was a 1949 Ford pickup truck that served as the general camp utility vehicle. The story I heard was that Ewalu inherited it from Brown's grocery in Strawberry Point; it used to be their delivery truck. It was a great vehicle to learn to drive "straight stick" on because the clutch was so very forgiving. We used it to haul stuff out to the campsites from the Cedar Lodge area and also for the occasional trip into Strawberry Point. (It couldn't go much farther than that.) Also, if you looked down while you were driving, you'd get a nice view of the pavement (or whatever) through the floorboard. 03/28/05 @ 14:08 · Email: ejfkjf@sbcglobal.net · IP: 68.94.166.187 Comment from: Kathy (Harms) Frostestad [Visitor] Joanne (Hillery)Goodman... 04/03/05 @ 10:11 · Email: jgodma24@netscape.net · IP: 65.101.92.215 Comment from: Joanne (Hillery) Goodman [Visitor] It's great to see some names that I haven't seen for such a long time. Kathy, I do remember you and that trip! Wow, time flies. Scott, Robin, how are you? Mark, Barb and Dave can't wait to see all of you at the reunion! I'm trying to talk my sister (Jean Hillery-Wims)into maybe being here on that weekend. I'm also letting her know of this site. Take care to all! My email address is jgodma24@netscape.net if anyone wants to get in touch! Smiles! Joanne 04/04/05 @ 15:18 · Email: jessnipp@yahoo.com · IP: 141.48.105.53 Comment from: Jessica Nipp [Visitor] Hi all! Greetings to Adam, Lynette, Rich and Tom Dettmer... Tom, I didn't know we were both EWALU alums. (Me: 1996, exactly 30 years after Tom.) This is a fun small-EWALU-world story: my sister married Tom's son. :-) 04/12/05 @ 10:43 · Email: btgulliver@cgids.com · IP: 12.33.216.227 Comment from: Todd Gulliver [Visitor] Hello all, 04/15/05 @ 13:37 · Email: mivestal@msn.com · IP: 206.131.30.1 Comment from: Mike Vestal [Visitor] I think my family will try to make it. Couldn't go last year. Ezekiel(Zeke) was about 2 months old and we wanted to tent camp. I think the whole family (my wife Amy, Seth and Zeke) will give it a shot this year though! Anyone else from 86 - 90 years going? Hey Todd! Hope to see you there with some other LE's from 1980. You know Paul will be there. 04/20/05 @ 14:24 · Email: ejfkjf@sbcglobal.net · IP: 68.94.114.197 Comment from: Kathy (Harms) Frostestad [Visitor] Hey Todd Gulliver...you were one of my counselors in

I worked the summer of 1987... Anyone else from that summer PLEASE email me parson_k@hotmail.com... I think of you all a lot. I currently am a teacher in Green River WYOMING, with my husband and my beautiful son, Colt. I look at the photo still from that summer and remember the great times, especially "the list" of goofy camper sayings, like canoeing with Todd Rawie, "Um, why is that rock floating in the river" and "Has anyone seen my casearan cup?" Miss you guys... summers at Ewalu are very memorable- I can't wait to relive those days- I have two sons
who are 7 and 31/2 and look forward to seeing them enjoy the experience. We live in west
des moines. I was a couselor and trailblazer coordinator in the summers of 1993-1994.
Anyone out there with me at that time? I was a Saint (LE) in
84 and a couselor in 87 and 89. My wife Julie (Grau) Laube was a couselor in 89 and
coordinator in 90. We will not be able to make it to the reunion this year. We live in
Eaton, Colorado and Julie works for Lutheran Ranches of the Rockies (Sky Ranch). I was a
camper for many summers and was on some great Flambeau trips in 82 and 83. Todd, you were
my couselor on one of those trips and Robin was a couselor on both of them. I remember
canoeing with Mark Hanson and being about 6'8", his paddling stroke was awesome. I
remember we had a little adventure with a hungry black bear in 83 and the torn pack hung
in the outpost for years. Hi to Kristy in Green River. I spent part of one summer doing
some engineering work in Green River and a few weeks one winter working at a trona mine
facility (luckily I worked above ground). 08/24/05 @ 13:51 · Email: matt_hibbard@hotmail.com · IP: 66.133.78.163 Comment from: Matt Hibbard [Visitor] Howdy! I was fortunate enough to be on staff in 1993,
'94, '95 and '97, and before that was a camper starting in... '83, I think. I have too
many fond memories to list! Suffice it to say, EWALU will always hold a very special place
in my heart. Before too much longer, I hope to start sending my own kids to camp. The
first one is on the way now! (On the way to being born, that is, not on the way to
camp...) 08/26/05 @ 12:11 · Email: jtstrud@netins.net · IP: 12.106.111.10 Comment from: Jon Strudthoff [Visitor] Hi to all staff of '77 & '78. Hope everyone is

crud encrusted was found in the river by Todd Gulliver. He polished it up as an example to
those pot scrubbers who complained that it wasn't possible to clean a plate to look like
new after a week of use (Early '80's). 10/28/05 @ 12:56 · Email: wadenated@hotmail.com · IP: 207.28.161.74 Comment from: Ted Fleener [Visitor] Sort of an update. My oldest son, David, a former EWALU staffer, got married to Lindsay Bell on August 20 in Burlington, Iowa. My mother passed away September 8 after a long illness. I married Diane Williams, a cardiac nurse on October 1. David is attending the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. I still cook, but just for family and friends. Take care and keep in touch. Have seen Alice and Myrna and some of the other cooks recently. They seem to be doing pretty well, but we all need to remember Myrna as she has knee surgery this fall. Hello to all. Take care and God Bless. Ted Fleener 11/04/05 @ 11:34 · Email: jgrice@humboldt.k12.ia.us · IP: 207.28.99.125 Comment from: Jon Grice [Visitor] Hello to all campers and staff members from the summer
