Just wanted to post a message and say "hi" to all my 95, 96, and 98 alums. Just for fun, I am curious to find out exactly how many people have worked on staff with Charlie Rod. If you worked with Charlie, give your favorite Charlie moment! Mine is the time Charlie flung a campers flashlight into the creek, then the next morning "had no idea" how his flashlight had water in it!

Hi EWALU friends! Sorry we haven't been able to attend the last couple of reunions. If you're unable to attend the reunions, try Family Camp. You'll find me (Robin) in the summer 2003 pictures under Family Camp on the 2nd page of pictures. Paul F. was so kind to take my picture after doing the zip line. Dave, Zachary (9), Shelby (6) and I have really enjoyed our family time at Family Camp the last 3 summers. It's been a wonderful chance to introduce our kids to EWALU, camping ministry and wanny camping (sleeping in Hickory because of the rain). :-) Actually we graduated to wanny camping... we did the cabins one year, a tent the next, and 2003 ~ Hickory. (I did feel guilty) Peace and Blessings, Robin Souhrada summer staff '87-'91 Dave Rogers summer Sunday volunteer staff '90-'91

Adrian - I worked on staff with Charlie Rod. I forget which summers, exactly, though... You already took my favorite story (although I smell the faint odor of someone's pants on fire, liar-boy), so I'll say my favorite Charlie story was the time he and Matt Hibbard performed together for the first time. It was the staff talent show in '94 and they performed a piece that Matt had written and Charlie had set to music about how they were frustrated with the toilet paper distributor for providing product of inadequate thickness to keep their fingers extrarectally located - not exactly the most camp-appropriate tune. Lisa Cornwell, the associate director, was sitting at the back of the room trying to look upset and keep from laughing at the same time.

Hello Adrian and Charlie. I do remember an 'Adrian' moment, when you stuck two breadsticks up your nostrils on night camp, but it was a while ago now. I've just heard from an old staff member at EWALU and they mentioned this site - thought I'd say hello. (If you remember me of course). Anoushka (from England)

Anoushka, how could I forget you? Of course, at this point, I sort of wish you would have forgotten me. I appreciate the memory, but next time, maybe you can share a story about how I saved a campers life, rather than shoving objects up my nostrils :)...also, as I recall, that was like the greatest week NC has ever seen!

Hey everybody. I was on staff the summers of 1973 and 1975. Would love to see the camp again. As a matter of fact, a group of musician friends from Cedar Falls who went to school with me around that time are looking for a retreat center to have a reunion. We are thinking about Memorial Day weekend (just in the planning stages) and may want to look at EWALU for the site. Rick Mareske, also on staff those years, and a former camper, lives here in Kansas City, and we still hang around and play music together. Would love to hear from any of you. Hi Dave and Barbara! Hello old camp friends!! I worked with Charlie Rod. My favorite Charlie Rod moment was in the van with Jason and Adrian driving to canoeing on the Turkey for orientation and you guys gave me a hard time about a certain counselor I asked to be in my canoe. Then we all shared the 'macking' moments from Charlie's past, and there were a lot, almost as many as Adrian. Current counselors can't read this can they? Er... I mean there never was any macking that went on at camp. My favorite Adrian moment was the Alpha message he gave about being comfortable with who you are no matter how much people might tease you. And then at the climax of his message proceeded to take off his pants to reveal has ratty old shorts with a rip up one side that we all thought we had burned. Oh yea, and we did give him a hard time about it, so it was actually one of the best Alpha messages I ever heard. Wait on more, I remember my first summer of camp I was there early for lifeguard training. The night that all the coordinators arrived we all gathered in fireside and Charlie gave us a concert complete with camp songs, his songs, and great side stories (like the one about the apron that Matt had got him from Charlie's in Arlington). That's when I knew that this special place in God's Kingdom was going to change me forever.

What an interesting board - glad I found out about it. A big "Good to hear from you again" out to all of you who I know (Paul, Adrian, Kurt, Charles, Lynette, Anoushka) and a "Nice to meet you" to those I don't. I worked with Charlie from '95 to '98 (right?) and have too many moments to properly choose a best one, but two great memories would be a whole summer of 'Outback' coordinating (going back to the Trailroom at dawn only to get up, pack food, and transfer Pack&Paddle campers the next morning) and a cool picture of Charlie holding me up by a climbing harness while I eat ice cream. Also riding around on Charlie's back in a Duluth pack. (I told you there were too many) Kurt - I'm not sure about your memory...I remember mostly mocking you, but there was some walk-in-cooler story...? :) Anoushka - Great to hear from you! I'd love to hear what one of my favorite 'secret agents' is up to! I'm currently a high school teacher at Center Point-Urbana High School here in Iowa. Hope to get back to EWALU soon. Take care everyone.

There was no "walk-in cooler story". None. None. None. No stories. As far as I'm concerned, there was never even a walk-in cooler, and if there was it was certainly just a place to keep food cold. Thanks for helping me out, though, Jason. You are, as ever, the all-chum. I would add to Jason's list of Outback summer memories (I agree, there were many) the day it rained beach balls, the day we established what constitutes "too much" Mexican food, the establishment of the rant 'n' drive program, and the day Darth Vader himself walked out of the Trail Room bathroom, although some of those might be from a different summer. Neat to see this board grow more active. Cheerful hellos to everyone I know (and everyone I don't - what the hey).

Hello everyone! Anyone around from '87,'90 or '91? I know Robin was. In fact, I have some pictures of you that you probably haven't seen yet. ;) I'm down in Texas (DFW area) working for American Airlines part time. The rest of my time I'm a Massage Therapist. (too many camp backrubs I guess) I was going through some of my camp stuff over Christmas. I was laughing so hard at the book of camper quotes. Most of them are the kind..'you had to be there'...cuz my sister wasn't laughing as hard as I was. But every quote was a moment...a moment at camp... that makes me laugh, as most things do. Anyway, everyone take care up there and try to stay warm this winter. I'll be back for the reunion again in Sept. Big Hugs!!! Lori

Hello from North Dakota -- last week we got over 24 inches of snow --so if anyone wants to do some cross country skiing, we've got the stuff for it. There are too many moments to mention about Adrian, Charlie, Jason and all, but a great time was had by all, and the memories will get you laughing again. Take care.

I want to make something clear. The Adrian Walter referred to in the right Rev. K. Hoovers story is not the same Adrian Walter that is currently the almighty Program Director at Ewalu. Alright Mr. Hoover, you and I need to have a chat about camp appropriateness..... And for the record, the shorts were not burned, they were just ripped from being worn all day, every day for 2 straight summers. Also, it is great to see this board being so active!

Hello everyone! We were on staff the summers of '98-'01, and got married in '02. We miss Ewalu a lot- especially now that we live in St. Louis! Jeremy is in his first year of the MDiv program at Concordia Seminary and is loving it. I'm working at a camp outside of the city as an outdoor and adventure education teacher- it is great fun! We were so excited to see this message board up, it is fun reading what people are up to! Jeremy worked with Charlie, but I never had the opportunity...guess I missed out! Have a great day!

Charlie! Kurt! Jason! Adrian! Anoushka! Jeremy! Hello, fellow staffers from '96 to '98. I can indeed confirm Adrian's R-rated ripped blue shorts--those things were SO nasty! Other Adrian memory: The ever-annoying "BISCUITS AND GRAAAAVY" chant. Night camp was always so fun with Charlie as coordinator. I remember when Jeremy, Tim and I were the three counselors, and we jokingly dubbed it "LCMS Week" at Night Camp. Charlie is involved in SO many memories... here's a serious one: You used to tell the kids the details of Jesus' torture and death, and all the kids (and counselors) who heard that were so moved by it. Also, Kurt and Charlie, I remember when we were camping with kids at the Old Mill site and were up late talking about all kinds of life stuff, and then the pastor came out and told us we were too loud. Whoops! And I'll never forget Jason dressing up as Indiana Jones for pot scrub. That was so great! Loved getting to know Anoushka, Jonathan and Daniel, all 3 from the United Kingdom. Jonathan (Wales) and Daniel (England) were always slamming each other's country. Sigh.

My dearest Ewaluers - Most of you probably don't know (or remember knowing) me but I've spent a week or two with a lot of you. Charlie, you were my Night Camp Coordinator in '98. Boy oh boy did I have a good time that week. You sang about rubber duckies, frightened campers with stories of watermellon babies and dropped a trailor hitch on your toe. Kurt, you were my Rock and Raft counselor in '99. You were in just a terrible state all that week because you were so nervous about asking Molly to marry you. I remember driving a few hours out of our way so you could ask her dad for permission and everything. Remember the song we made up for you? (To the tune of the Jello song) *I have a question ... For Molly...The question requires...to get on one knee...* Anoushka! My goodness! You were one of my counselors when I was a Native in '96. You were the sweetest out of all of the counselors that week. I loved hanging out with you and your group of girls. I've even stayed in touch with a few of them! I'm pretty sure Steph Robbins was our coordinator that week too but Im not sure. Lynette...one word....AGAPE! And Adrian, you're just a nerd. *wink* Seriously...I could go on for days about all the great times I had as a camper. I really was and am fortunate to have Ewalu in my life. This summer will be my second year as a counselor and I can hardly wait. Gee...hmm..sorry this was so long! I tend to ramble about things like this!

Well, here I am, a second semester senior at Luther College who has no motivation to do homework... so in the midst of my procrastinating I happened upon this lovely site. I just want to say, I love EWALU. I began going as a trailblazer camper in 1992, and I, like Megan Owen, remember many of the aforementioned stories, only from the camper side. I was one of those pack-and-paddlers that Charlie and Jason would pick up and drive around after they hadn't gotten any sleep. I remember Adrian always talking about biscuits and gravy. I remember Jason dressing up like Indiana Jones. I remember food being delivered to the outpost in the beloved Pickle. More recent memories of my summers on staff include listening to Handel's Messiah during potscrub while Matt Janssen wandered around in a tuxedo, encountering Eric Hanson and Matt Lapka during their Tan Man hunts, and listening to Jeremy Freeman's jokes, and hearing Amy Ottesen brag about how she pooped on Canada on the fourth of July. Also, once, my day camp team and I were eating at a Chinese restaurant, singing "baby shark" and sticking chop sticks up our noses, when the hostess came up to us and asked us if we were camp counselors. Can't imagine how she figured that one out...

Hello and greetings to the staff of 94-97. I talked to Lynette last night and she told me to check this out. I'm out in Denver, CO, and I'm a counselor at Excelsior Youth Center working with teenage girls with emotional and behavioral issues. There are so many things that I remember about Charlie from "Don't ever put the kids in one big line during the Hoe Down again!" to his humor when Kitten (the cow) died during break week. Oh, and answering the phone "EWALU, God loves us best" (with Ann Ehlerding on the other end of the phone) Talk to you all later.

Hello. I was a camper at EWALU every summer from about 1974 or 1975 until 1981. Then I worked during the summer of 1982 in the Leadership Training program. I really enjoyed being there that summer. I live in Hawaii now and don't know when I'll be able to make it back to a reunion weekend. But I have fond memories of EWALU. Growing up, it was always a bright spot in my summer--being able to go spend a week at Camp EWALU. And working there was just as fun. Aloha, Carolyn
